Reaper wasn't around and neither was Renoise. FL, at the time I really got into it, was the best bang for the buck.It would duplicate the patterns, but about half the time the pattern was just a hair misaligned which would sound fucked up. While I liked Cubase, I actually found it really frustrating because, at the time, functions like duplicating a section of something (the analogue of ctrl-B in FL) didn't work properly.I really liked the non-linear, blocks/patterns method of constructing a song - building in small interchangeable pieces made it easy to construct songs with a weak background in music theory.I started using it really early (version 3) and my experience with it followed the development of FL.I used FL for years before making the switch to ableton. Everything is intuitive and once youre used to it you can do so much more than you can in FL. Ableton is harder to get into but I think it has much more benefits in the long run. FL is my primary DAW for a few of reasons: Warbeats has a great section of videos for beginners on FL. I've played around with several applications - Mixman, Acid, Groovemaker, Cubase, Reason, Reaper, Renoise.
